Elisa Avila

Elisa Avila is a PhD Student in the Department of Sociology with research interests in race, community and urban sociology, environmental justice, place and the rural-urban continuum. Her research investigates questions related to place-based practices, particularly issues of environmental racism. She uses qualitative methods and incorporates spatial-mapping techniques that are connected to population level patterns with local experience and expertise. She intends to pursue a dissertation that examines how regional population systems are affected by placed- based practices of racial exclusion.
